With the Launceston City Council passing a motion to appeal to the State Government to rename the Batman Bridge, Greens candidate Jack Davenport said it’s time for both major political parties to accept the need for change.
“It’s really heartening to see Launceston City Council pass this motion, and I congratulate Greens Councillor Tim Walker on the initiative.
“The Launceston Council has shown they understand it’s completely unacceptable to have a monument of this sort named after a well-documented murderer of Tasmanian Aboriginal people.
“The Greens have been very clear – we strongly support renaming this bridge. Now the ball is in the court of the Liberal and Labor parties. Will they finally stop sitting on the fence and accept the need for change?
“If they won’t commit to changing the name of this bridge, the question must be asked – why not? Why are they so interested in defending the legacy of such a vile person?

“Taking down statues and renaming monuments isn’t about erasing our past. It’s declaring that some parts of our history belong in a museum not on a pedestal.”

The Launceston City Council has voted to appeal to the Tasmanian Government to change the name of the Batman Bridge.
Chairman of the Tasmanian Aboriginal Land Council and trawlwoolway man Michael Mansell told NITV he was happy with the Launceston City Council’s decision.
“Good on them,” he said. “Well done Launceston City Council, because a local government that is as big as the Hobart City Council, or the Launceston City Council, any decision they make in this context would be very difficult for whoever forms government in May to ignore. “You can almost feel that the change is taking place, and it’s being led by local government, and major governments are going to have to follow.”
